A gem by the great Will rarely performed in France…
The King of Navarre and three of his companions take a vow of celibacy for three years to devote themselves to study. Stroke of bad luck! For unavoidable diplomatic reasons, the Princess of France and three of her ladies arrive and have to be received…
At the same time, a whole gallery of characters from the commedia dell’arte and Spanish theatre ape the manners and loves of sovereigns and provoke misunderstandings and catastrophes…
All the styles and levels of language are here addressed and parodied by Shakespeare in a work of pure entertainment, which makes language, words and poetry the real engine of the action… To the point of twice bringing the theatre into the theatre.
And yet here is a comedy which, contrary to the rule, has no denouement!
In a satirical picture of the court and the countryside, Love’s Labour’s Lost combines, in perfect symmetry, wit and sauciness, affectation and burlesque, romantic comedy and farce…
It is also a comedy of initiation… which deals with youth, its passions, its violence and its thirst for the absolute, to the glory of women in the end: they triumph here and will end up leading the dance!…
